in a nutshell
What is Fusion?
Fusion is a network of college-based, student-run small student groups who expressing, exploring and experiencing Christianity together. The 'cells' are open to anyone who is interested in exploring what what following Jesus means.
Come again?
Every cell is different from the next, but a "typical cell group" is made up of 6-10 students from the same college. They meet together once a week in term time to hang out, discuss things, study the Bible informally, and if people are comfortable with it, pray and worship as well.
Some have an intense four hour debates. Some pray and read the Bible for 10 minutes and then go and meet with homeless people. Others stick to the ‘four W’s’.
They are celled ‘cells’ because they are natural and organic, but also because each cell is designed to multiply into two when new people join it, so the group doesn't get bigger than 10-12 people because that's the size where it works best.
Fusion is not simply the student work of one church. Students gather because they are united in a desire to see God move in their college. This means that people have a shared immediate context within which to work out the values.
Who is it for?
Students who are interested in Jesus. Maybe you don't believe in God but are intrigued why some some people do. Or perhaps you're a Christian and want to meet others in your college. Very few people in Fusion are 100% sure about life, the universe and everything, but they've found truth in Jesus which makes life alarmingly exciting. And, because it's not just a Bible study group, it's about exploring stuff and working things out together, with people who are your friends whatever you believe or think.
Who runs it?
Students. The first group was started by undergraduates in Trinity 10 years ago and Fusion spread from there. But cells have always been run by students for other students. Not because any fool can run a cell, but because 10 years have shown that they make a very good job of it! And we're pretty hot on training and supporting people.
So what's so special about it?
Fusion groups are based on a few values that probably make them a bit different to Christian things you've experienced before. These include everybody having a part to play, everyone being open to growing as a person, and keeping the relationships in the group real and honest. Importantly, and hopefully you will have experienced this before, the cells are centred on Jesus; his person, his teaching, his example, and relating to him today.
It's not a cult is it?
No. And to make sure it doesn't become one, it has a few trusted anchors.
While Fusion is student run and welcomes members from any background, we are supported by a number of local churches in Cambridge.
And if that is not enough, Fusion Cambridge is also affiliated to Fusion nationally, who have a very respectable Council of Reference as long as your arm. We subscribe to the Evangelical Alliance Basis of Faith, and locally are advised and supported by a number of established churches. We work officially and informally with other Christian student groups including Chaplaincies.
Could I give it a try?
Of course. If you want to visit a cell meeting to see for yourself, just click here and your nearest group will get in touch. You don't have to go back and you won't be Bible-bashed. That's a promise. |
